The story of the Japanese Kamishibai!

The story of the Japanese Kamishibai, the paper theater on the street, takes center stage today in the events of Multilingualism. It highlights inclusion, collaboration among multilingual families, travelers, children with diverse linguistic experiences, and teachers in mixed classrooms. It embodies a wise strategy of art, storytelling, cooperation, and intercultural learning.

At the School of Nature, we designed and implemented this tool as part of our Christmas celebration for young children. It became a journey into the world of parents who wished to share the languages, customs, and traditions of Christmas from their homelands—Pontian lyre and carols from Pontus and Trabzon, customs from Kozani and the Sarakatsani villages, Hanukkah traditions from parents from Israel, as well as influences from Mexico, Texas, Turkey, England, Germany, France… and even my parrot was there!

Kamishibai offers opportunities for interaction, collaborative preparation, storytelling, and comparison of linguistic structures. A heartfelt thank you to educators Tania Apostolou and Eirini Dimitriadou for their exceptional collaboration in designing and executing this project.

A big thank you to the entire School of Nature. On Saturday, December 21, at 11:00 AM, we look forward to welcoming you to a Multilingual Café at our beloved Bazaar, Papamarkou 34-36, Athonos Square.
Event Coordinator: Dr. Argyro Moumtzidou
