Thematic Field Trip to Thessaloniki
Inspired by our theme “Thessaloniki” and the subtopic “The city’s economy,” Third Grade went on an educational field trip aimed at helping children understand how the market functioned in the past and how it is shaped today.
The route began at the Roman Agora of Thessaloniki, where they discovered how trade was organized in antiquity and what role the market played in people’s daily lives.
They continued to the modern organized Kapani Market, observing how a historic commercial center of the city operates today.
The experience concluded in a more “free-form” market setting, in the area of Agia Sofia in Thessaloniki, where the children had the opportunity to see a different commercial dynamic.
The students took on the role of young journalists. They conducted interviews with shop owners, asking:
• Why did you choose this profession?
• Where do you source your products from?
• Which professions have disappeared over the years?
Through this experiential experience, the children observed similarities and differences between the past and the present, understood the evolution of Thessaloniki’s economic life, and collected valuable material that we will use as we continue our theme in the classroom.
Because when the city becomes a field of learning, knowledge gains voice, image, and real meaning. 🌆📚
