The village through its people and their stories
Grade 3 began its own exploration of Lakkoma, seeking not only to get to know the village, but also to discover the stories and knowledge of the people who have lived there.
In preparation for our visit to Lakkoma’s senior citizens’ centre (KAPI), the children prepared their own questions, discussed how to conduct an interview and practised asking questions. They also made thank-you cards for the older residents who would share their experiences and memories with them.
Through their accounts, the children discovered aspects of village life and realised that knowledge is not found only in books. It is also found in people, their experiences and the stories they pass down from generation to generation.
The exploration continued through the streets of Lakkoma. The square, the medical centre, the primary school and the playground became places to observe and opportunities to connect what they had heard with what they could see around them.
And so, through research, interviews, observation and hands-on experience, the children began to wonder how a place changes over time and how the people who live there shape its history.
Grade 3’s journey has only just begun.
