Exploring Light through CLIL!

In our Grade 5 Science CLIL unit, our students explored light, combining science learning with the meaningful use of English.

During the unit, they studied:

✨ luminous and non-luminous objects
☀️ natural and artificial light sources
➡️ how light travels in straight lines
🔍 transparent, translucent and opaque materials
👤 light and shadows
🪞 reflection and refraction

Working in groups, students took part in a range of experiments: they aligned openings to observe the path of light, tested how it passes through different materials, measured changes in the size of shadows and used mirrors to direct a beam of light.

In each activity, they recorded their observations on specially designed worksheets, exchanged ideas and discussed their findings. Through collaboration and experimentation, we drew conclusions together and mastered the relevant academic vocabulary.

At the same time, English served as a real tool for communication and discovery. Students naturally practised the Present Simple, the modal verb “can”, and the Zero and First Conditionals as they described what they observed and predicted the outcomes of their experiments.

Because in CLIL, we do more than simply learn English or science:

We learn science through English and English through discovery!
